Diary of Lois Elaine Jelin: Entry Eighteen

Entry Eighteen

Saturday, January 18                                           Weather marked as Rain.

Dear Diary,

Got report cards today this is my best yet. Got into “active”

Social Studies     AEE    Mr. Faulk

English              BSS    Miss Thompson

Drama               AEE    Miss Sellers

Math                 AEE    Miss Hancock

Phys. Ed.           ASS    Mrs. Crosby

Spanish             BSS    Mrs. Nicholson

I think I should have gotten A in English, no complaints other wise. The ‘Love- Bug” is coming along very nicely. About the A9 party & Robert asking me to it–he didn’t.  Took a bath & went to bed early. Hope it won’t rain tomorrow.

Adam Arcuragi and The Lupine Choral Society, “Presidents’ Song”

Adam Arcuragi strikes me as the modern equivalent to an 18th-century itinerate preacher. When those floorboards creak under his climb to the stage, women swoon and swearing men grow tame. The way he writhes around a microphone with an imploring Bayou passion is at once soothing and exhilarating. His rhythms rhyme and roll, and he deftly uses volume and tempo to allure, reeling you in, bringing you close before the crescendo where he leaves an everlasting mark. And there, where the scarlet double AA is burned onto your eardrum, is where he’ll stay. An aural memory that finds you in the finer of moments, a call to recollect the places you have been and the things that you have seen. Simply put, Adam Arcuragi harkens; he is a harkener. And what more is a Preacherman supposed to do?

Dear Diary,

All the kids like my hair (except Elesa who insists on calling me baldy). Went to Dr. Cornelius to get a check-up. I don’t have to have corection any more. Angel, Mrs. Sellers & I rehearsed the “love” scean [scene] in “Love-Bug”. Ummm it was nice. Robert hasn’t asked me to the A9 party yet (hear’s hoping).

Dear Diary,

Jean & me went to the show. Saw Joan of Ark it was pretty good. Gosh Diary, it doesn’t seem possible that in 2 weeks I’m graduating & moving. I feel kindda empty inside.

Editorial Note:

Here is a video montage made from Ingrid Bergman’s Joan of Arc directed by Victor Fleming (1948) seen by Lois on this date in 1951:

Dear Diary,
