Daily Dose: Andrew Bird, “Tik Tok”
As always, exquisite.
Daily Dose: Nina Simone, “I Loves You Porgy”
If you haven’t watched “What Happened, Miss Simone?” yet, maybe now is the time.
Daily Dose: Cigarettes After Sex, “Bubblegum”
Is there any other band with a name that more perfectly reflects its sound?
Daily Dose: Lana Del Rey, “A&W”
If you have a blog that explores nostalgia, you’re contractually obligated to like and share music by Lana Del Rey.
On a level deeper beneath the surface, her music helps me navigate the experience of being a public woman. Here, where I am Content, people expect me to be specifically what they want, nothing more or less. My laugh is irritating, I sure don’t look like a historian, I must be an intern at the nonprofit I run, I sound like a failed comedian, I am too white, I am too woke, I am not enough but I am also too much.
“It’s not about having someone to love me anymore. This is the experience of being an American whore.” Drops beat around 4:10.
Daily Dose: Hayden, “Are We Good”
One of my all-time favorite artists who continues to give me exactly what I need.
Daily Dose: Tiny Ruins, “Me At The Museum, You In The Wintergardens”
Nobody feels old at the museum.
Daily Dose: Norah Jones, “Killing Time”
How can it take so long?
Daily Dose: Jeremy Dutcher, “Ancestors Too Young”
Jeremy Dutcher is a Wolastoqiyik member of Canada’s Tobique First Nation. A composer, an activist, an ethnomusicologist, Dutcher is an absolute force. NPR even called him a leading light in the country’s Indigenous Renaissance in 2018. I’m just beginning to discover what he’s creating and I’m very much impressed.
Daily Dose: Serge Gainsbourg ft. Jane Birkin, “Je t’aime…Moi non plus”
News spread over the weekend that Jane Birkin has passed away at the age of 76. Few people have had more of an enduring impact on my sensitivities than Birkin, and her daughters–Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou Doillon–are a constant source of kindred inspiration to me. I won’t even get into how she reminds me of my mother, which is a long way of saying…this one hits home.
